The Academy Awards
It is an honor just to be nominated
A short post this week. As you probably know, the Academy Awards were handed out last night. Above, the great Amy Madigan finally gets her due recognition for playing Aunt Gladys in Weapons. I remember seeing the film that earned Madigan her first nomination, Twice in a Lifetime, with my high school girlfriend at a mall somewhere in Charlotte. As we walked across the parking lot to my burgundy Chevette, I told her, “She’s going get an Oscar nomination.” (This statement proves my keen awareness of Madigan ’s talent, and total lack thereof regarding my own sexual orientation.)
In the spirit of trying to stay positive and lift up certain films, I’m going to call your attention to three short films that did not take home an “Oscar” statuette last night, but are worthy of your attention.
The Devil is Busy
A brilliant short film about a women’s health clinic in Atlanta.

Jane Austen’s Period Drama
Hilarious, pitch-perfect, so smart. This is how you parody a genre.

Retirement Plan
An animated short that starts funny, then sneaks up on you with its wisdom and truth.
See you next week.
